Switzerland

I intentionally chose Switzerland for my first solo trip because I had read that it was a great destination for women traveling alone, and I wanted somewhere with plenty of nature and adventure. I split my time between Zurich and the Bernese Oberland, trading city streets for lakes, mountain villages, and a few very full days outdoors.

Why I Love Switzerland

Serenity, With a Side

of Adventure

There’s beautiful, and then there’s Switzerland. The kind of beautiful that makes you stop for a second and wonder if what you’re looking at is actually real. What stayed with me most, though, was how tranquil I felt among the majestic mountains, impossibly blue lakes, and quaint little towns. The Bernese Oberland had this almost storybook quality to it, with one incredible view after another. Traveling solo gave me the freedom to experience it all on my own terms, filling my days exactly how I wanted and moving through the trip at my own pace.

Kleine Scheidegg

Kleine Scheidegg is the place I’d go back to in a heartbeat. I remember standing there almost completely alone, watching clouds blow past the mountain ridges. Instead of feeling lonely, I felt almost surrounded by the quiet and the scenery. It was one of those rare travel moments that felt a little unreal, and I still think about it now.

Active Exploration

My favorite travel days usually involve some kind of sporty activity. While in Switzerland, I kayaked on Lake Brienz, explored the Aare Gorge walking trail, and rode an e-bike from Iseltwald toward Interlaken, passing through little towns and mountain villages along the way. I loved how each one gave me a different way to experience the landscape.

Paragliding

Paragliding sounded like a good idea right up until it was actually time to do it. I was standing on top of the mountain convinced I was going to trip and ruin the whole thing, then my guide yelled “RUN!” and suddenly we were airborne. I was still holding on for dear life, but I was fully present, eyes wide open, and actually enjoying the ride.
