Maldives

The Maldives was really my sister’s bucket-list trip, and I was happy to make it happen when I found an insane flight and resort deal. We spent a week at Furaveri Resort, where our days fell into an easy rhythm of lazy mornings, beach time, and planned excursions. The slower pace was a change for me, but it turned out to be just what I needed.

Why I Love The Maldives

A Different Pace

The Maldives may be known as a honeymoon destination, but that didn’t stop my sister and me. After 35 years together, we decided a “sistermoon” was in order. The joke got even better when we found ourselves at a candlelit sunset lobster barbecue and seafood buffet on the beach, surrounded by couples. Beyond the romantic setting, the resort felt like our own private-island retreat. The staff were friendly, the food was delicious, and there was plenty to do without ever needing to leave the island. Even arriving was memorable, with a slightly nerve-racking but very cool seaplane ride over tiny islands scattered across the ocean.

Ocean Excursions

Being surrounded by water meant some of the best activities happened off the island. We snorkeled with sea turtles and manta rays, tried paddleboarding, and took a sunset dolphin cruise. Swimming alongside the sea turtles was easily my favorite activity. They were much more graceful in the water than I expected. It was really cool being in the water with them and watching them move so naturally.

Island Life

Even on our quieter days, we found little ways to stay active around the island. We rode bikes, played badminton, and hopped on the golf cart buggies whenever we didn’t feel like walking. The buggy drivers were some of the friendliest people we met, always joking with us as they drove us around.

Overwater Bungalow

Since we were going all the way to the Maldives, staying in an overwater bungalow felt like a must. We had a deck with a netted hammock where I could lounge while my sister swam right outside the room. Looking down into the water, we could see fish swimming below and even little blacktip reef sharks passing by.
